After finishing high school, Herb joined the Navy. In the Navy, he developed an interest in and began to specialize in electronics. Armed with technical skills, he joined American Photocopy Equipment Company (APECO) as a copier technician. Almost immediately, he moved from service to sales and became the top producing copier salesperson in the company. In the years to follow, Herb became the top producing Sales Manager in the country.
In June of 1965, with $1000 of borrowed capital, Herb Chambers moved to Hartford, Connecticut, rented an old barbershop where he founded his own photocopier business called A-Copy. Possessing a relentless drive to work day and night combined with his obsessive commitment to customer and technical service, Herb grew A-Copy to become the largest independent distributor of office equipment in the country. In September of 1983, Herb sold A-Copy to Alco Standard Corporation, which is known today as IKON. At the time of the sale A-Copy had 1,000 employees, with 28 locations in 10 different states.
Without a thought of retirement, Herb sought to start a new business. His new venture had to be a highly service intensive distribution company. Given Herb's absolute love of cars, the automobile business was a natural choice. In 1985, Herb purchased his first retail center in New London, CT., and called it Herb Chambers Oldsmobile Cadillac, and shortly thereafter purchased a 2nd in Providence, R.I., Herb Chambers Cadillac. Next, in 1986 he opened Herb Chambers Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Mazda in Hartford, Connecticut. Two years later, in 1989, Herb Chambers Honda, BMW, Saab opened in Boston and shortly thereafter came Herb Chambers Honda in Burlington. After that, retail centers came in rapid succession and in just a few short years, the Herb Chambers Companies became the largest in New England and the 5th largest E-Tailer in the country.
"We never set out to be biggest," says Herb Chambers. "With my love of cars, I had been a victim of more car dealers than anyone I know. I just wanted to prove that if you treat your customers with respect and live up to your commitments, you can be successful". Obviously Herb's formula has worked. J.D. Powers and Associates has awarded us more awards than any other Dealer in North America.
